This is the Vatican Saying #63. It belies the oft-repeated (but unsupported) claim that Epicurus was an ascetic who felt that subduing our desires was the path to enlightenment. Instead, Epicurus is saying that there is a balance between subduing desires and satisfying them.

The clear implication is that the way to determine the balance is the same way an Epic determines anything else: which will bring the most net pleasure?
